PSALM 70 [1]

I am afflicted and needy

Prayer that God makes haste (v.1)

1 O God, hasten to deliver me;

O Yahweh, hasten to my help!

Prayer against enemies (vv.2-3)

2 Let those be ashamed and humiliated

Who seek my life;

Let those be turned back and dishonored

Who delight in my hurt.

3 Let those be turned back because of their shame

Who say, “Aha, aha!”

Prayer of blessing upon those who love God (v.4)

4 Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;

And let those who love Your salvation say continually,

“Let God be magnified.”

Prayer that God makes haste (v.5)

5 But I am afflicted (Psalm 68:10; 69:29; 72:2,4,12; 74:19,21) and needy; [2]

Hasten to me, O God!

You are my help and my deliverer;

O Yahweh, do not delay.

[1] Psalm 70 is a near reproduction of Psalm 40:13-17.   “Yahweh” of 40:13a, 16 is replaced by “Elohim” in 70:1a, 4; but “Yahweh” of 40:13b remains as “Yahweh” in 70:1b, while “Elohim” of 40:17b is replaced by “Yahweh” in 70:5b (The Anchor Bible Dictionary).  Other Psalms that are “repeated”: Psalm 57:7-11 is found largely in Psalm 108:1-5; Psalm 14 with 53.

[2] The word ebyôn appears 23 times in the Psalms, most often in Psalms of Lament. (The Anchor Bible Dictionary)
