The Lion from the Tribe of Judah
God’s victory (vv.1-2) |
1 God is known in Judah; [1] |
His name is great in Israel. |
2 His tabernacle/lair is in Salem; |
His dwelling place/den also is in Zion. |
Description of the battle’s aftermath (vv.3-6) |
3 There He broke the flaming arrows, |
The shield and the sword and the weapons of war. Selah. (Psalm 46:9) |
4 You are resplendent, |
More majestic than the mountains of prey. |
5 The stouthearted were
plundered, |
They sank into sleep; |
And none of the warriors could
use his hands. |
6 At Your rebuke, O God of Jacob, |
Both rider and horse were cast into a dead sleep. |
The Lion is to be feared (vv.7-12) |
7 You, even You, are to be feared; |
And who may stand in Your presence [lit. before Your face] when once You are angry? |
8 You caused judgment (dı̂n) to be heard from heaven; |
The earth feared and was still |
9 When God arose to judgment (mišpāṭ), |
To save all the humble of the earth. Selah. |
10 For the wrath of man shall praise[2] You; |
With a remnant of wrath You will gird Yourself. |
11 Make vows to Yahweh your God and fulfill them; |
Let all who are around Him bring gifts to Him who is to be feared (môrā˒). [3] |
12 He will cut off the spirit of princes; |
He is feared by the kings of the earth. |
[1] The Hebrew word for “known” (yāda˓) sounds like the Hebrew word for Judah (yĕhűdâ). |
[2]
The Hebrew word for “praise” is yadah and
sounds like the name Judah (see Genesis 49:8). |
[3] The Hebrew word translated “feared” (môrā˒) in v.11b is different from the word translated “feared” in vv.7a,8b,12b (yārē˒). |
