PSALM 131

Like a weaned child

1 O Yahweh, my heart is not proud,

nor my eyes haughty;

Nor do I involve myself in great matters,

Or in things too difficult for me.

2 Surely I have composed and quieted my soul;

Like a weaned child rests against his mother,

My soul is like a weaned child within me.

3 O Israel, hope in Yahweh (Psalm 130:7)

From this time forth and forever. (Psalm 121:8; 125:2) [1] [2]

[1] It seems that Psalm 131-132 fit in well with the Songs of Ascent and the tradition that this collection was sung by pilgrims going to Jerusalem.  2 Samuel 6 is about the ascent of the Ark of the Covenant to Mount Zion.  David was not afraid to humble himself before God even though he was king.  In 2 Samuel 7, God makes a covenant with David and this is the background for Psalm 132.

[2] To hear Psalm 131 sung listen to Waterdeep and Jason Coghill.
